Every third Saturday in October, the New River Gorge Bridge is closed in celebration of Bridge Day, West Virginia’s largest one day festival. Active Southern West Virginia is pleased to host the annual Active SWV Bridge Day 5K every morning of Bridge Day.
Beginning in 2016, 179 racers participated in the inaugural event. The race begins on the north side of the NRG Bridge, along town streets, and then finishing in front of the Historic Fayette County Court House.
Each year the Active SWV Bridge Day 5K generates funding for area elementary Kids Run Clubs offered for free to students and schools by Active SWV. These area Kids Run Clubs teach healthy lifestyle skills while building confidence in physical activity at an early age.
The 2017 Active SWV Bridge Day 5K had 241 racers and offered a Youth Essay Contest for local youth to submit answers to two questions; why is physical activity important to you and what does Bridge Day mean to you. You can read each of these submissions here; Olivia, Evan, Chase, Morgan, Kaylee and Emma.
The 2017 Active SWV Bridge Day 5K was made possible by partnership and sponsorship from West Virginia University of Technology, UniCare, and Highmark WV.
This event offers breath taking views, a small town course, and a supportive vibe for first time 5K runners. Everyone is celebrated with a finishers medal and group photo.
There are so many special moments during this event. Families are running together, returning West Virginians, local high school cross country athletes, and first time 5K runner.
The next opportunity to race across the New River Gorge Bridge will be on October 20th, 2018. Follow us on Facebook for the race registration opening date.

Active Southern West Virginia has introduced the Kids Run program to 20 elementary and middle schools in the four county New River Gorge region. Here is what one teacher said about the program at her school:
“Several teachers in our school have come up to me and expressed their gratitude to me for leading this run club, saying that their ‘troubled’ kids have done a complete 180 and have a positive outlet to plug into now! This is all of the gratification I need to continue this journey with our school.”
– Cassie Smith, Hinton Area Elementary
Kids are the future leaders of our community and state. Learning the importance of physical activity now will motivate them to carry on a healthy lifestyle while inspiring their families and friends. Creating a healthy generation will build strong communities and attract a new economy to West Virginia. Join the Challenge.
