I hope you and your family are safe and well. We understand these are unique times and you are facing difficult decisions every day about your daily and weekly routines.
Active Southern West Virginia has decided to limit personal contact through the month of June to focus on continuing to bring you online resources. Bare with us, we are in the background preparing in-person programs to deliver the social supports greatly needed to recover from the medical, economic, and emotional toll this has taken on our communities.
Use the month of June to invite your immediate friends and family to be active with you. Extend the invitation to meet online, over the phone, and distanced in your neighborhoods. Having companionship in healthy behaviors will make you more successful in reaching your goals.
Wait, you need a goal? Explore below all the ways you can safely be active with your friends and family right now!
Stay safe and active,
Melanie Seiler

Get Active at Hawks Nest Lake – Paddle Board/Qi Gong/Hike

June 27, 2019 @ 12:00 pm3:00 pm

Active Southern West Virginia volunteer Community Captains will be providing free activities on June 20th at Hawks Nest Lake to include stand up paddle boarding, Qi Gong (a practice of Tai Chi), and a group waterfall hike. This afternoon is perfect for families with different interests to try multiple activities. Grand parents, grand kids, cousins, siblings, neighbors, and friends can all find interesting ways to be active at Hawks Nest Lake.
Paddle Board!
Paddle sports are a great way to experience the outdoors and stay active. Southern West Virginia has accommodating venues to experience flat water activities. Active SWV programs are beginner level with a focus on safety education. This is a great way to refresh your paddling skills or have that first paddling experience and it is FREE.
Stand up paddle boarding is a great beginner paddling activity. Some balance is needed, but first times can start sitting or kneeling. Active SWV Community Captains will be with you the entire time to provide instruction and help you through all the steps to independent standing and paddling.
All equipment is provided and distributed on a first come, first serve basis. Everyone will be asked to sign a waiver of liability. There will be a 10 minute on-land instruction session and then 20 minutes on the water depending on the crowd.
Youth are encouraged to attend but must be accompanied by a guardian and the adult must stay on site during the activity.
Qi Gong!
Come join Community Captain Aletha Stolar for beginner friendly Qi Gong in the art of Traditional Chinese Medicine – gentle movements and breathing for harmony, balance, and healing. Learn simple movements in this helpful group setting. We encourage everyone of all ages and abilities to attend this wonderful program.
Group Waterfall Hike!
From Hawks Nest Lake we will hike as a group to Turkey Spur Creek which cascades over the canyon into the lake. Wear sturdy shoes, and long pants are recommended.
Review updates posted in the “Discussion” section of this Facebook event page for driving directions, meeting location, and near by amenities.
Get Active in the Park is an innovative partnership between the National Park Service and Active Southern West Virginia. Trained Community Captains deliver free, beginner-level instructional programs to the New River Gorge region. Get Active in the Park empowers our community to see outdoor spaces as a place for health and wellness to take place. This project was made possible in part by a grant from the National Park Foundation through generous support of the Coca-Cola Company and Coca-Cola Foundation.
