I hope you and your family are safe and well. We understand these are unique times and you are facing difficult decisions every day about your daily and weekly routines.
Active Southern West Virginia has decided to limit personal contact through the month of June to focus on continuing to bring you online resources. Bare with us, we are in the background preparing in-person programs to deliver the social supports greatly needed to recover from the medical, economic, and emotional toll this has taken on our communities.
Use the month of June to invite your immediate friends and family to be active with you. Extend the invitation to meet online, over the phone, and distanced in your neighborhoods. Having companionship in healthy behaviors will make you more successful in reaching your goals.
Wait, you need a goal? Explore below all the ways you can safely be active with your friends and family right now!
Stay safe and active,

Hawks Nest National Trails Day Hike
June 1, 2019 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Come celebrate National Trail Day with Community Captain Jacki Kay hiking the beautiful Cliffside Trail at Hawks Nest State Park, everyone is welcome to attend this group hike to celebrate hiking in one of our scenic WV State Parks right in the heart of the New River Gorge. This hike is part of the Active SWV State Park Tour in partnership with WV State Parks.
The trail starts behind the Midland Trail Shelter near the lodge and ends near the Hawks Nest Overlook at Route 60. Sections are rugged and adjacent to steep drop-offs. This is an excellent trail for viewing the geology of the New River Gorge, high Nutall sandstone cliffs and the waterfall of Turkey Creek. Hikers also will see the Hawks Nest Dam and Tunnel areas. To return to the lodge, cross Route 60 at the lower park, take the steps behind the gift shop to the old museum, walk the service road to the end, then cross Route 60 to the lodge. Use caution when crossing the highway and near all steep embankments. Children must be accompanied by an adult and pets must be leashed.
What’s National Trails Day® All About?
Taking place on the first Saturday in June, National Trails Day® is a day of public events aimed at advocacy and trail service. Thousands of hikers, bikers, rowers, horseback riders, trail clubs, federal and local agencies, land trusts, and businesses come together in partnership to advocate for, maintain, and clean up public lands and trails.
Come show your support, get in some steps, and take in the beautiful scenery with your friends and family and Active SWV on National Trails Day.
