Grant Funding Expands Popular “Get Active in the Park” Program

Active Southern West Virginia will partner with New River Gorge National River throughout the entire park for the entire year! The possibilities are endless on the adventures we will find. Everything will be introductory level and free.

Volunteers Needed to Teach Outdoor Classes

The National Park Service and Active Southern West Virginia have received a second year of grant funding from the National Park Foundation’s Active Trails program. This grant will fund an expansion of the “Get Active in the Park” program that was piloted with success during the summer and fall of 2016 at the recently opened Camp Brookside Environmental Education Center inside New River Gorge National River.

In its second year, the program will once again bring FREE, beginner-level, guided outdoor activities and mini-classes to the park. New for this year, activities will be offered year-round, and throughout all of New River Gorge National River, as well as at the Bluestone National Scenic River. Also new this year is the addition of winter programs such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, as well as other programs such as meditation, orienteering, and rock climbing. The activities are meant to introduce people of all ages and abilities to the variety of healthy outdoor adventures and recreational opportunities to be had in the National Parks of Southern West Virginia.

This year’s Get Active in the Park series kicks off with a winter sports demo planned for Saturday, January 28, 2017. For more information about this event, or others in the series, check out the Facebook page at Get Active in the Park.
