Active SWV offers programs and opportunities year round for kids and families to be active! 

Check out some exciting things coming up designed to keep you motivated and moving this year. 

Kids Creative Contest for two FREE registrations to the Bridge Day 5k RUN

Active SWV is holding a Kids Creative Contest for free entry into the Bridge Day 5k RUN! The contest will have two two category options, ‘art’ and ‘essay.’ This contest is an opportunity for kids to show off their art or writing skills and win free entry into Active SWV’s Bridge Day 5k RUN!
 
Kids Creative Contest General Rules and Requirements:
  • Youth must be a West Virginia resident under the age of 18 to submit their art piece or essay.
  • The contest will be open from April 1st until July 31st, 2026.
  • Winners will be selected on a rolling basis.
  • There will be three winners in each category. Each winner will receive two free entries into the race.
  • Please only submit to one category!

Beckley Half Marathon & 5K – kids 12 and under run 5k for FREE

Make plans to join us for the Beckley Half Marathon & 5K on Saturday, September 26, 2026. Starting and finishing at the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, this race blends local history with a scenic course through the streets and rail trail of Beckley. This event offers a welcoming atmosphere for runners and walkers of all levels.

The best part is, kids 12 and under can register and run the 5K for FREE!

Youth Rock Climbing

Trained volunteer Community Captains lead free activity programs every month, including rock climbing! All rock climbing is beginner friendly, and all equipment is provided. Check our website calendar for all rock climbing program details this month. 

These programs fill up quickly! Be sure everyone attending is signed up for their free membership, and has pre-registered for the program. 

Hiking for the whole Family

Community Captain volunteers regularly lead hikes in the New River Gorge, as well as, in state and local parks. These hikes are a great way to get everyone out and active, while enjoying the views with a group.

See our website calendar for a list of all hikes this month, and be sure everyone attending had signed up for a free membership before attending. 

Coming soon – Stand Up Paddle Boarding

Stand up paddle boarding, or SUP for short, is a great way to have fun and cool off on a summer day. Trained Community Captain volunteers lead beginner SUP programs that are great for families to join! 

SUP will start making an appearance on the calendar in May, so check for upcoming programs and be sure to pre-register since equipment is limited.
