Kids Hike Clubs

Kids Hike Clubs were designed with the same goals as Kids Run Clubs – to get kids active, outside, and build their confidence in physical activity and in themselves. Hiking Clubs additionally teach kids about the outdoors and what’s available to explore in their greater community. Kids learn trail etiquette and Leave No Trace principles, learning to respect the environment around them and leave it a better place for others to enjoy after them.

What is a Kids Hike Club?

Kids Hike Clubs are 6-8 week volunteer led initiatives designed to get kids active, outdoors, and confident in their abilities. Different barriers can prevent kids for getting exposed to trails and outdoor spaces near them. Kids Hike Clubs are free for schools and participants and aim to make hiking and the outdoors more accessible to everyone.

In hike clubs, kids learn outdoor safety, trail etiquette, leave no trace principles, and more. Volunteer Kids Hike Club coaches go through a training with ASWV staff to familiarize them with the program structure outlined in the Kids Hike Club manual. Volunteer coaches then select days, times, and locations to hold their series of hikes. Clubs will typically hike one location a week for the 6-8 week period, but the frequency can vary based on the club’s preference. Any interested teacher, parent, or community member may volunteer as a Kids Hike Club coach, especially someone who is passionate about getting outside and has some familiarity with local trails.

How to start a kids hike club

Are you interested in seeing a Kids Hike Club at your school? Here is what you need to get started:

Every hike club needs a lead volunteer or team of lead volunteers, as well as one or two supporting volunteers to help keep the group focused. The number of volunteers depends on the size of the group.

ASWV can help with this when you meet to talk about the season. Think about where you will hike, how often, what age group of kids you want to open the club to, etc.

When you are ready, reach out to Active SVW to schedule a meeting to talk about the season. In the first season planning meeting, we will go over the Kids Hike Club manual and help you develop a season plan so you feel confident and ready to start a Kids Hike Club.

Active SWV is with you every step of the way through planning, implementation, and post season wrap-up. We offer technical assistance throughout to help you have a successful season!
