Congrats, Kids Run Clubs!

Spring Season Recap

Another spring Kids Run Club season is wrapping up! Despite the slow start to the season due to snow days and cold weather, 32 schools participated this season, with over 860 kids and 55 volunteers. Many schools wrapped up the program in May, but a few have final practices and Fun Runs scheduled in early June.

Six new schools joined the Kids Run Club community this season: Beckley Elementary, Clear Fork Elementary, Dunbar Primary, Middle Creek Elementary, Shepherdstown Elementary, South Branch Elementary, and Timberwood Elementary. These six joined 26 returning schools: Athens Elementary, Aurora School, Berlin McKinney Elementary, Bruceton School, Chamberlain Elementary, Conner Street Elementary, Dunbar Intermediate, Jumping Branch Elementary, Kanawha City Elementary, Lashmeet Matoaka Elementary, Melrose Elementary, Montcalm Elementary, Morgantown Early Learning Facility, Mountain Valley Elementary, Mountain View Elementary, Norht Elementary, Peterson Central Elementary, Princeton Primary, Smithville Elementary, Stanaford Elementary, Stratton Elementary, West Teays Elementary, Wildwood Middle, Woodsdale Elementary, and Wright Denny Intermediate. Congratulations to all participating schools for an incredible Kids Run Club season!

Volunteers make the Kids Run Club program possible! See what a few of them had to say about their experience with the program this Spring:

“I feel that the grant funds are the success of the club! We are a Title I school that has many diverse cultures and families, many of our students are students at the university and there are not a lot of extra funds. What I appreciate is that the mini-grant allows us to provide resources to the students without having to have a fee like other running programs (Girls on the Run tuition). Medals and the extra funding toward prizes really made year 3 the best one yet!” says Stephanie Cummings of North Elementary. “In my opinion, it [the Kids Run Club program] has drastically changed the culture of our school! Teachers from all over the school, parents, and counselors have sung the praises of the Run Club. From conversations around the building to the excitement happening during club, kids are excited to be active and look forward to the club. In passing, students will ask coaches what we are doing that day and looking forward to being active! Even my current class of students are looking forward to being able to join the run Club in third grade. They are excited to be active.”

“I’ve noticed greater connection. Some students who never talked to me or other staff involved before were excited to check in with us during the week between practices and let us know they were excited for the next practice,” says Cynthia Morris of South Branch Elementary. “They helped give the students a sense of being part of a team. Many of our running club kids are kids who do not participate in other sports, and so this was a nice experience for them to have.”
