Active Places: Climbing in the New River Gorge

Few places offer the opportunity to try an exciting outdoor activity in a setting like the New River Gorge. Through Active Southern West Virginia’s Get Active in the Park partnership with New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, community members can experience the region’s world-class climbing while learning the basics in a supportive, beginner-friendly environment.

About This Event

Whether you’re completely new to climbing or looking to try something different outdoors, these climbing opportunities are designed to make getting started approachable and fun.

Participants meet at Water Stone Outdoors before heading out to the climbing area together. Equipment is provided, so you don’t need to own climbing gear or have previous experience to participate.

The focus is on learning, movement, and enjoying the experience. Trained leaders help participants become comfortable with the basics while encouraging everyone to challenge themselves at their own pace.

What to Expect

Participants can expect:

  • A beginner-friendly introduction to climbing
  • Equipment provided
  • Instruction and guidance throughout the activity
  • Time spent climbing in the New River Gorge
  • An opportunity to meet other people interested in outdoor recreation

No previous climbing experience is necessary. Come ready to learn something new and experience the Gorge from a different perspective.

The Benefits of Climbing

Climbing is much more than simply getting from the bottom of a rock face to the top. It is a full-body form of exercise that challenges your strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, and endurance.

Because climbing requires you to constantly think about your next movement, it also provides a mental workout. Finding a route, planning movements, and adapting to the rock can improve problem-solving and concentration.

Climbing can help develop:

  • Full-body strength: Climbing engages the arms, legs, core, back, and grip.
  • Balance and coordination: Climbers constantly shift their weight and coordinate multiple movements.
  • Flexibility and mobility: Reaching and positioning the body on the wall encourages a wide range of movement.
  • Endurance: Longer climbs challenge both muscular and cardiovascular endurance.
  • Confidence: Learning new skills and reaching a challenging section of a route can provide a strong sense of accomplishment.

Perhaps most importantly, climbing can make exercise feel like an adventure rather than a workout.

A National Park in Our Backyard

One of the greatest recreation assets in southern West Virginia is right outside our doors. New River Gorge National Park and Preserve provides an incredible setting for hiking, climbing, paddling, biking, and countless other outdoor activities.

Having a national park in our backyard gives local residents an opportunity to experience some of the country’s most remarkable natural landscapes while staying active close to home. Programs like Get Active in the Park help connect community members with these public lands and make outdoor recreation more accessible to people who may not know where to begin.

Get Active in the Park

This climbing program is part of Get Active in the Park, an Active SWV partnership with New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. The program creates opportunities for community members to explore the park through physical activity and discover new ways to enjoy the outdoors.

By bringing people together in the park, these programs also help build a stronger connection between physical activity, outdoor recreation, and the incredible natural resources found throughout the New River Gorge region.
