Active SWV would like to introduce the February Community Captains of the month, Teresa Workman and Jennifer Robinson . These amazing ladies are the Community Captains of our Pickleball Program. They had the time to answer a few questions for us about theirselves, what motivates them, and why you too should join an Active SWV free program.
• Tell us about yourself, where are you from, and how did you end up in WV?
We have both have lived in WV all our lives.
• What motivated you to volunteer with Active SWV in your community?
Ron Butler brought Pickle Ball from Florida to WV this summer when he and his wife, Carol, volunteered to be Community Captains. They started a beginner Pickle Ball group for Active Southern West Virginia while serving as volunteers for the National Park Service. When they had to leave early in September to repair damage to their Florida home from Hurricane Irma, we had fallen in love with Pickle Ball and wanted to keep playing. If you want an opportunity, you need to be willing to contribute to make it happen, so we decided to assume the Community Captain duties.
• How do you stay motivated?
Why is being active a priority for you?Pickle ball is fun so it’s easy to stay motivated! There is also the commitment to others in the group, as well as the social activity involved. Being active helps relieve stress. Some days it just feels good to whack a ball! Even if we are tired when we show up to play, we always feel better after wards.
• Why do you think someone should join an Active SWV free program?
It’s fun! It’s free! It’s a great opportunity to try a new activity with no financial commitment and meet new friends, too.
• Do you have any words of encouragement for people thinking of becoming a Community Captain or are interested in becoming more physically active?
Being a Community Captain is easy. Active SWV is very supportive with arrangements for facilities, providing equipment and promoting the activity.
