Gabriel Cabrera Becomes Active SWV’s Next AmeriCorps VISTA

Gabriel comes to southern West Virginia from Oklahoma City where he has worked as a project coordinator and tutor. Gabriel shares this about his role the past 5 years, “This has allowed me to work with students from over 15 different countries in the fields of health care, civil rights, and post-secondary education. I think that the latter is a big difference maker in many peoples’ lives and strive to make it accessible to as many as possible.” He holds an MBA in Health Services Management from Oklahoma Christian University as well as a BA in English/Corporate Communications from Ohio Valley University. In addition, he slated to begin work on an MPH within the next year.

Active Southern West Virginia (Active SWV) is in its 6th year serving Nicholas, Fayette, Raleigh, and Summers Counties. Last month the announcement was made to expand to serve Boone and Kanawha Counties. Services include free volunteer training to lead community based physical activities such as weekly walking groups, running, aerobic, yoga, and welcomes any activity ideas volunteers may have. Additional programs include Kids Run Clubs, Workplace Wellness, and community Bicycle Pedestrian Action Committees that support local government policies, systems, and environments to increase safe places to be active.

Volunteer recruitment and partner engagement will be increased with the addition of Gabriel Cabrera, Program Support Specialist, as an AmeriCorps VISTA. This position was made possible by the Coal Heritage Area Authority in partnership with Active SWV. Gabriel will be increasing capacity throughout the organization for a one-year term.

Gabriel goes on to share a couple fun facts about himself; “I keep track of the counties I’ve been to since I visited out all 50 states by age 17. I spent two years marching with the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps of Dubuque, IA and enjoy playing and coaching ultimate frisbee.”

We are excited to have Gabriel’s experience and passion for public health joining the Active SWV team. You can find him supporting the Community Captain program and youth activities. Gabriel will help more people in southern West Virginia have access, training, and support to create more opportunities for physical activity.
