Youth Essay Winner: Evan Nicolau

We are excited to announce another winner of the Active SWV Bridge Day 5K Youth Essay Contest; Evan Nicolau!

Youth ages 18 and under shared with us their story to win 2 free entries to the event. Entries should answer “What motivates you to be active?” and “Why do you want to participate in the Bridge Day 5k?”

“My name is Evan Nicolau, and I was born here in West Virginia. It’s really a privilege to live where I do. There are lots of activities I love to do here, including trail running, mountain biking, paddling on the lake and the New River, and rock climbing—and I love to do them all!

What motivates me to be physically active is primarily encouragement from my family. I love the quality time I get to spend with my family outside. I also love that good sense of accomplishment after doing something hard. Every time I doubt myself, I tell myself “I can do it. I won’t give up.” When I feel like I need a break, the trails really help put my mind at ease. I want to stay active for as long as I can!

I want to participate in the Active Southern West Virginia Bridge Day 5K because I want to show people they can do anything they put their minds to! I also love 5K’s because they are challenging, but they are the perfect distance—not too short and not too long. Running across the bridge would be really cool, too!”

Proceeds from the Active SWV Bridge Day 5k will benefit our Kids Run Clubs Program. This fall there are 1000 youth participants in 15 Active SWV Kids Run Clubs throughout Fayette, Raleigh, Summers, and Nicholas County. Active SWV Kids Run Clubs give kids the opportunity to learn about physical activity and healthy living in a fun way. You can support this meaningful program AND be a part of a special race during West Virginia’s largest one day festival, Bridge Day!

Don’t miss out on the chance to run across the New River Gorge Bridge in 2018!
