Active SWV would like to introduce Darla Keenan, February Community Captain of the Month. Darla is Active SWV’s first Community Captain of 2019. Darla will be starting a brand new walking group in Gauley Bridge at the Ruby Winebrenner Community Center. This is a great opportunitity to bring fun and exciting programs to the residents of Gauley Bridge.
Darla grew up in Gauley Bridge and like many others moved away for work but ended up coming back to her home town. Darla’s path to increasing her physical activity level started like many others. She had some health concerns and suffered a series of strokes. This was her wake up call. Darla said she was overweight and not taking care of herself the way she should. She decided that walking was her ticket to become healthier. Since she began walking she has increased her overall health and went from a size 24 to a size 12.
Darla is active in her community and church, and she loves to walk and work out. Darla discovered Active SWV by attending a City Council meeting in Gauley Bridge and decied she wanted to motivate others and bring new physical activity opportunities to her community. We asked Darla what advise she would have for someone that would like to join in an Active SWV program. She said, “We are not promised another day, so you need to do it today.”
People of all ages, abilities and residences are welcome to join Darla’s free walking group starting February 1st at 6:00am at the Ruby Winebrenner Community Center (Former Gauley Bridge High School). The group will meet Monday-Friday, please note the group will not meet in the outdoor temperture is below 30 degrees.
