First settled as a trapper camp in 1792, Lake Stephens has since become a cornerstone of outdoor recreation in Raleigh County.
The 2,300 acre lake and forest feature great activities for everyone. A small water park and beach allow the whole family to get out into the water while two different launch areas give folks year round access to boating on the lake. RV parking and a sizable campground afford an excellent outdoor experience just minutes from downtown Beckley.
Molly Williams, Executive Director for the Raleigh County Parks and Recreation Authority, touts the area as a hidden gem just outside of Beckley, commenting on new additions coming over the next year.
“Raleigh County Parks and Recreation Authority is excited to be partnered with Active SWV in 2021 to provide volunteer Community Captains with a multitude of activity resources to lead group programs. Lake Stephens is also a great place for families and individuals to find ways to stay active year round. We are constructing a Disc Golf Course that will offer yet another outdoor recreation opportunity for our community to utilize all year. We are also working on new maps and signage for our roads and trails to make navigating easier.”
As these projects are finished, Active Southern West Virginia is hoping to work with local community members to offer free activities led by members of our Community Captain program. Past activities have included hiking & walking groups, tai chi, water aerobics, stand up paddle boarding, disc golf, and more! The possibilities are endless!
