May Participant of the Month

Jody-Kay Skeen is a member of the Active SWV Summersville Walk/Run goup.

Tell us about yourself, where are you from?

Jody-Kay Skeen lives in Canvas, but she is originally from Beckley. She lived for a while in North Carolina and has now moved back to the Summersville area. She started Weight Watchers in 2010 and lost 100 lbs. Jody said she did gain some back but thanks to Community Captain Lauren Beam she started hiking, walking, and doing 5ks, and she is now 5lbs away from goal weight. Jody has developed a love for hiking because of Lauren and recently hiked to the top of Seneca Rocks. She said it was nice to find a group that hikes.

What motivated you to participate with Active SWV in your community?

Lauren motivated her to participate and several of her Weight Watchers group members participate in Water Aerobic with Active SWV.

How do you stay motivated? Why is being active a priority for you?

“Before I lost any weight, I had high blood pressure, and my triglycerides were off the carts. My doctor recommended exercise an intentional extra 30 minutes a day. After my weight loss my test results were the best, they have ever been. Lauren is such an inspiration to keep me going”, says Jody.

Why do you think someone should join an Active SWV free program?

“For their health and how they feel about themselves. When you get in the car you feel like ‘I did that’. You meet new people and have an opportunity to communicate. I get to mark it on my calendar. I mark it with shoes goal is 100 days and I’m on day 27.”

Do you have any words of encouragement for people thinking of  participating in a program that may be interested in committing to becoming more physically active?

“I always say it’s like going on vacation and using your GPS to navigate, just because it may have to recalculate you will get there if you keep going.”
