Fall Youth Programming Recap

Fall Kids Run Club Season

This Fall, Active SWV ran the third cycle of the Kids Run Club mini-grant and expanded the program to reach eight new schools. Overall, the following schools participated in the fall program: Oak Hill Middle, Fayetteville PK-8, Rupert Elementary, Bluefield Intermediate, Marsh Fork Elementary, Ronceverte Elementary, Mt. Nebo Elementary, Mt. Lookout Elementary, Alderson Elementary, Richmond Elementary, Hilltop Elementary, Ridgeview Elementary, New River Primary, Nichols Elementary, Criss Elementary, Kanawha City Elementary, and Sophia Christian Academy.

New Youth Programs Offered

While the core of Active SWV’s youth programming is still the Kids Run Club program, we are excited to develop new curriculums like Hike Club and Disc Golf Club to offer to schools.

This fall we had two returning Hike Clubs – one at Mt. Lookout Elementary and one at Fayetteville PK-8. Active SWV has developed a Kids Hike Club manual to help adult volunteers lead kids through Leave No Trace principles, trail etiquette, and other tools to help them enjoy and respect the outdoors.

A new program we piloted this fall was a Disc Golf club at Fayetteville PK-8, using the new course just built there.  This club was hugely successful, and we would like to be able to offer Disc Golf resources to schools in the future.
