Route 3 TRY-athlon

Route 3 TRY-athlon

Join us at Lake Stephens off of Route 3 on Saturday, June 10th, 2023 for a fun and FREE family TRY-Athlon! Come out for running, biking, and beach activities including stand up paddle boarding (SUP). Active SWV will have equipment and volunteers ready to help you try out a bike course, marked run, and SUP.

The event will be at Lake Stephens beach on Recreation Road off Lake Stephens Road. Please complete the online registration before the event for everyone in your family planning to attend. Check-in at the event will be from 8:00-8:30am at shelter #2. Please arrive within this time window to check-in before the activities begin. Traffic to the area will be closed during the event because of runners and bikers, so please do not drive in or out until the event has concluded.

What is the Route 3 TRY-athlon?

This is a TRY-Athlon, meaning participants have the chance to try out the traditional elements of a ‘Triathlon’. Active SWV will be offering running, biking with helmets, and water activities all in one day. This event is for families to participate in together – please stay with your child(ren) at all times throughout the event.

The goal is for participants to complete each activity (running, biking, and SUP) at a distance and time that is comfortable and challenging for them!

For the Run, Active SWV will have a running route set up with different mile markers (up to a 5k) so participants can run whatever distance they would like to challenge themselves to.

For the Bike, same setup. Active SWV will have a course marked off where families can safely bike through the park. **Active SWV has limited quantities of bikes and helmets available, especially sized for younger children. If you have your own bike and helmet, please bring your own (there is an option to select this in the pre-registration).**

For the Water activities, Active SWV will have 10 SUP boards and lifejackets for participants to try out in a no wake zone on the lake next to the roped off swimming area. The swimming area as well as the inflatable course will be open for families to utilize while waiting for SUP equipment to come available every 20 minutes.**Children aged 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult on their SUP board. If you have your own SUP board, please feel free to bring it along to use.**

The running and biking activities will take place during the first half of the event from 8:45am – 9:45am, with plenty of time for participants to try out both. Then, those activities will wrap up and all participants will go down to the beach for the water activity section at 10:00am for the remainder of the event. **Due to limited bathhouse availability and time, participants are highly encouraged to wear their water attire under their biking/running clothes rather than changing onsite between activities.**

What else should I know about the event?

There will be food available for purchase from the concession stand, and Active SWV will have giveaway items for participants once they finish their run, bike, and SUP activities.

We recommend that families bring the following items with them to have a fun and successful day at the TRY-athlon:

  • Towel
  • Sunscreen
  • Water/snacks if needed
  • Change of dry clothing for after the event
  • Bike/helmet if applicable. Please register to borrow one if needed

Wear a bathing suit under comfortable/cool clothing. There will not be time between events for changing
Wear appropriate footwear for running and biking.

All participants will receive a day pass to the beach so they can stay and play even after the TRY-Athlon is over! Thank you to the Raleigh County Parks and Recreation Authority.

Thank you to AEP for sponsoring this event, and to Raleigh County Parks and Recreation for the use of Lake Stephens!
