2023-Active SWV 12 Days of Fitness

December-12 Days of Fitness

Active SWV is celebrating the season with 12 Days of Fitness! Follow along as we post a new fitness challenge for 12 days in December to stay active in the colder winter weather.

1. Ugly Sweater Fun Run/Walk

Bring out the family and enjoy some holiday cheer at Fayette County Park on Dec. 3 from 4:45-6:00 pm. $10 cash or check at gate, ages 10 and under are free. Event page found HERE.

2. Winter Hiking

In truth, I think you could hike for all 12 days of fitness. The fresh air, absence of bugs and snakes, and empty trails always brings me back to a peaceful place even during the crazy holiday months. See some trail ideas found HERE.

3. Line Dancing

Knock the dust off of those dancing shoes and join Greenbrier County Line Dancing at Old Stone Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall on December 6th,  13th, and 20th at 6 pm! If you are closer to Kanawha County, have a go with Soul Line Dancing at the Kanawha City Recreation Center on Tuesdays at 6 pm.

4.  Greenbriar River Trail Walk (and shop)

Meet Community Captains on Saturday, December 9th at 10am at the Caldwell Trailhead for a trail walk and shop.

5. Walking Groups Galore

Get those steps in and make new friends too at one of our many walking group opportunities:

Ansted Walking Group, Marion County Indoor Walking Group, Charleston Walking Group, Northfork Walking Group, Webster County Walking Group, Morgan County Walking Group, Blessed and Fit for Christ Walking Group

6. What about running?

Our Fayetteville Running group meets every single Thursday at 6:00 pm. Meet at Secret Sandwich Society (park on Court St.) in Fayetteville.  Join a friendly group of people who welcome all levels of runners!

If you are closer to Beckley,  join the Beckley Running Group on Tuesdays at 6:00 pm. Meet weekly at the Paul Cline Soccer Complex/Piney Creek Trail System.

7. High Fitness class in Fayetteville.

High Fitness is a great way to get moving with an even better group of people! Join the fun Tuesdays at 9 am at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building in Fayetteville for a free high intensity dance-style aerobics class!

8. Pickleball

Need a break from all of that holiday baking? Stay out of the kitchen while attending Pickleball at Midland Trail Community Center on Monday and Wednesdays at 10 am.

9. Get Active in the Park

We have two opportunities for you to utilize free Community Captain led programs in the New River Gorge National Park.  Your first opportunity is Dec. 29 at 12 PM -Kaymoor Trail Hike (trailhead: Wolf Creek via Fayette Station Road). Your second opportunity is the annual 1st Day Hike Jan 1 at 10 am -Southside Trail (trailhead: Brooklyn Campground-Bottom of Cunard Rd).

10. Don’t forget to take some time to slow down and be mindful.

This movement and mindfulness video from Pilates Instructor Angie Corwin at Activated Body is great for kids and adults to follow along.

You can also join one of these activities that also promote mindfulness:

  • Fayetteville Mindful Walking, Tuesdays at 6 pm, meet at the Memorial Building Parking Lot.
  • Yoga at the WV Health Right Community Wellness Center/Westside, Dec 4, 8, 11, 18, and 22 at 6pm.
  •   Meditation at the WV Health Right Community Wellness Center/Westside, Dec 16 at 12pm.
11. Take a Refit Class

If you have never gone to one of our Refit classes (we have them in Beckley and Charleston) you really should give it a go!  They are offered virtually every day of the week between those two counties, are free, and truly anyone and everyone will leave feeling refreshed, welcomed, and moved.

12. Try one (or all five!) of these fitness cards designed by Community Captain Kate Miller here

For those cold days, when you are stuck inside, these cards will make staying active easier.  Get Active without leaving the house.
