Active Places: Skating in Oak Hill

Skating Takes Oak Hill by Storm: Join the Fun and Fitness Revolution

Oak Hill has recently become a haven for skating enthusiasts, and the driving force behind this movement is none other than our very own Community Captain, Leah. Her passion for skating is infectious, and she’s made it her mission to share the joy and benefits of this exhilarating activity with everyone in the community.

“Skating is a sneaky workout!” Leah explains. “You are having so much fun while moving that you do not even think about the wellness benefits. The activity itself is a happy ‘place’ for people, and there are so many ways to challenge yourself no matter what your skill level. Unlocking that next move, gain, skill is sure to build confidence that transfers to other areas of your life. Why not gain all of that and some like-minded, supportive skating friends too. I know I leave every session with a smile on my face even if my quads and glutes are a bit sore. (It’s the good sore though…)”

The Benefits of Skating

Skating offers a myriad of physical and mental benefits. It’s an excellent cardiovascular workout that improves heart health and increases endurance. The repetitive motion helps to build muscle strength, particularly in the legs and core, enhancing overall stability and balance. This low-impact exercise is gentle on the joints, making it accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels.

Mentally, skating can be incredibly rewarding. The process of learning new moves and mastering skills fosters a sense of accomplishment and boosts self-esteem. It’s a fantastic way to relieve stress and enjoy the present moment, focusing solely on the rhythm of your movements and the wind in your face.

Enjoying the Outdoors

Summer is the perfect time to take advantage of the beautiful weather and engage in outdoor activities. Skating is a great way to soak up the sun and get some fresh air. It can be done almost anywhere with a smooth surface, whether you’re gliding through parks, around your neighborhood, or at designated skate parks. So far, the group has skated at the parking lots of Blue Ridge Insurance and the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce in Oak Hill, as well as the Fayetteville Town Park Pump Track and Skate Park.

Community Captain Megan Waves Hi!
Growing the Skating Community

Oak Hill is fortunate to have excellent facilities that support the growth of the skating community. The Fayetteville skate park has been a popular spot for skaters for years, and now, with the newly opened skate park right here in Oak Hill, there’s even more space for enthusiasts to practice and play.

These skate parks provide a safe and welcoming environment for skaters of all skill levels. They offer various ramps, rails, and other features that challenge advanced skaters, but with plenty of flatter features to learn on too. The sense of community at these parks is strong, with skaters often sharing tips, encouraging one another, and forming lasting friendships.

Join the Fun!

Leah invites everyone to bring their skates and helmet and join the fun in a beginner-friendly setting. Whether you’re new to skating or looking to refine your skills, these sessions are designed to be inclusive and supportive. It’s a fantastic way to meet like-minded people, stay active, and have a blast.

So, why not give it a try? Skating is not just a workout; it’s a way to connect with others, challenge yourself, and enjoy the great outdoors. Come and experience the joy of skating in Oak Hill – you’ll leave with a smile on your face and maybe a bit of that good, sore feeling in your quads and glutes. See you at the skate park! Currently Active SWV’s skate programming is Thursday nights at 6pm, check the MemberPlus App or Active SWV Roll Out’s group page for the skating location each week.
