Joyce Tenney of Diana, WV in Webster County is the Active SWV August Participant of the Month!
Joyce stays active through the Webster County Indoor Walking and Exercise Group because it helps her mental and physical health. “I find after a hard stressful day, a little bit of sweat will put all problems into perspective,” she says.
Joyce has always tried to stay active, but during COVID she was only able to maintain a walking regime, and still she saw her weight increase. Joyce joined the Active SWV Diana Community Center exercise program with Community Captain Mary in November 2023, and has since seen many health gains. These gains include some weight loss, blood pressure and BMI decrease, and improved A1C levels.
Joyce stays motivated because she finds that she needs her class and misses them when she is unable to attend. When Joyce attends class she feels great, and she misses that feeling when she can’t make it to class. Joyce also adds, “I feel committed to my teacher and others in the class.”
Joyce makes being active a priority because both of her parents suffered from health conditions and her father passed away at a young age. Watching their struggles with their heart, breathing issues, and other health conditions helped Joyce set a goal to not be required to stay on medication as she ages. Joyce has reached that goal through her activity and dietary choices.
Joyce believes Active SWV free programs are great for the community. “Many people think they can’t do an exercise class. We all can do it, start small, set goals. You will be glad you did!“
