November Participant of the Month, Karen Berry

Karen Berry is the November Participant of the month!

Karen Berry is a participant with volunteer Community Captain Jamie Carrier’s walking group in Marion County. Jamie works for WVU Extension and Active SWV is proud to partner with extension agents and family nutrition providers throughout West Virginia to help bring free physical activity programming to communities. A special thanks goes out to the Marion County Parks and Rec for allowing this amazing walking group to utilize a free indoor space.

Karen has always tried to exercise to stay in shape and stay healthy. “It just makes me feel better to move, and I even have more energy,” she says.

Karen has always been a walker and even joined the gym once, but did not like always exercising alone. She saw information in the newspaper for Community Captain Jamie’s free walking group, and wanted to try something different. Karen has been coming and walking with the group each week for over a year now.

Karen stays active and motivated because her overall physical and mental health is her priority. “I want to stay active and independent for as long as I possibly can,” says Karen.

Karen thinks everyone should try an Active SWV free physical activity program because it’s fun and it really helps her to feel better. “This class starts my day on a positive note. We encourage each other, we laugh, and we have formed great friendships through this,” Karen says.  Many members of the walking group live by themselves, and that gets lonely at times. The walking group gives Karen a reason to get out of the house and socialize with others, all while exercising.

Active SWV offers free program options for communities that are beginner friendly and multi-generational. Check out our website calendar for more information!
