Celebrating Community Leaders at the 2025 Community Captain Conference

Celebrating Community Leaders at the 2025 Community Captain Conference

On March 29, Active Southern West Virginia (Active SWV) hosted its annual Community Captain Conference at Tamarack in Beckley, WV. The day was dedicated to hosting our incredible Community Captains—the volunteer leaders who bring free physical activity opportunities to communities across the region—and welcoming new faces into the Active SWV family.

The energy in the room was electric as returning Community Captains reunited and new volunteers were introduced to the mission of Active SWV. The day featured inspiring guest speakers who shared insights on health, wellness, and the power of community connections to the 36 attendees from 7 counties across WV. Their stories and experiences reminded us all of why we do this work: to create a healthier, more connected Southern West Virginia.

Community Captains participated in breakout sessions, networking activities, and idea-sharing discussions designed to support their roles as leaders in their communities. Whether leading a weekly walking group, organizing a fitness class, or hosting a youth program, these volunteers are the heartbeat of Active SWV.

A highlight that came from the Conference is the re-emergence of the Summersville Running Group. Newly trained Community Captain Chris Klug will be spearheading this group that kicks off in May!

The Conference wrapped up with a full room REFIT class hosted by the dedicated group of REFIT volunteers who are celebrating 10 years of REFIT in the Beckley area this year. If you haven’t attended a REFIT class yet, check the calendar for the next date near you.

We’re incredibly grateful for each and every Community Captain who gives their time and passion to make free physical activity more accessible to all. And to our new Captains—welcome! We’re so excited to support your journey.

Special thanks to our sponsors for the event:

What is a Community Captain?

Community Captains are volunteers across WV who lead an activity of their choice, at their preferred times for their community members to attend. Active SWV will work with a Community Captain to pair them with an Active Place appropriate for their activity. Learn more here.
