The Evolution of Youth Climbing in Southern West Virginia

Scaling New Heights: The Evolution of Youth Climbing in Southern West Virginia with Active SWV

Active Southern West Virginia (Active SWV) is committed to fostering healthy, active communities. One exciting initiative that has taken root is our youth climbing program. From humble beginnings to a thriving community endeavor, the story of youth climbing in Southern West Virginia is one of collaboration, dedication, and the unwavering spirit of our Community Captains.

The Seed of an Idea

In 2022, the seed of an idea was planted: a local climbing club connected to a middle school. Elizabeth Raney, Active SWV Community Captain Director, recalls the initial challenges. “At the time, we were honestly still navigating COVID. I was new to the job and had ZERO experience with rock climbing of any type.” Existing climbing equipment was unusable, presenting a significant hurdle.

Undeterred, Elizabeth applied for a Beckley Area Foundation SLYP grant to purchase youth climbing equipment. While the awarded amount wasn’t enough to fully equip a program, it sparked a creative pivot.

Partnerships and Progress

Active SWV partnered with Outside In Climbing Gym in Beckley to offer Youth Climbing nights. This collaboration introduced local climber and community activist Mitch Lehman, who shared his passion for outdoor climbing. “It did not get us closer to that goal of sustained local youth climbing, but it was something,” Elizabeth noted.

The following year, Mitch connected Active SWV with Adventures on the Gorge (AOTG) and John Farley. Together, they organized outdoor climbing dates at Bridge Buttress, Needlseye park, and other locations, using AOTG’s climbing equipment and some additional volunteer guides.

Indoor Adventures and Growing Interest

During the winter of 2023 into 2024, the WVU Tech Bouldering Barn became a valuable indoor space. Community Captain Mitch traded leading outdoor youth climbing for indoor youth bouldering, and led sessions throughout the winter. Limited to six participants per hour-long session, these events were incredibly popular, drawing youth from Fayette, Raleigh, and Summers Counties.

Independent Climbing in the Community

The impact of these free youth climbing opportunities has been remarkable. Lucas Raney, inspired by his experiences participating in the outdoor climbing sessions, launched a Youth Climbing Club at Woodrow Wilson High School in the fall of 2024. This independent initiative exemplifies Active SWV’s climbing program success in fostering a passion for climbing within the community. The Woodrow Wilson climbing club plans for skills clinics in Spring 2025 and expansion during the fall of 2025.
