Active SWV’s July Community Captain of the Month is Gretta Hairston from Smithers
Gretta is from Montgomery, WV but has called many places home throughout her life. Educationally, she holds a BS in Biology with a Chemistry minor, an MA in Interpersonal and Organizational Communication, and has worked as a Medical Technologist.
Gretta stays active because at almost 70 years old, she understands the importance of activity and health. She started being physically active when the Baisi Center was available to residents in the Upper Kanawha Valley, swimming laps in the pool. She began volunteering with Active SWV with the hope of offering a swimming program at the Baisi Center in Montgomery, but it has not been able to reopen.
Gretta leads Chair yoga and spin bike classes in Smithers that she took over for her husband, Jerome, during his illness. She continues to stay motivated because having these activities available is not only important to her physical and social well-being, but also for others in her community.
Gretta would prefer her activity come from her favorite form of movement, swimming. However, she stays active on dry land because “staying physically active directly correlates with being healthy.”
