2025 Kids Creative Contest Winners

This year, Active SWV launched a Kids Creative Contest for WV youth to win free entry into the Bridge Day 5k RUN. Kids under 18 were invited to submit either a piece of art or a short essay about being active, and what the race means to them.

We are excited to announce three youth winners for 2025! Learn more about each contest winner and the art pieces they each submitted below.

Jacob Lucas

Youth Artist Bio: Jacob Lucas is a 14-year-old from Mercer County with a strong love for sports. He spends much of his time playing baseball and basketball, as well as competing in running events. Jacob also enjoys weightlifting, which helps him stay strong and improve his athletic performance. Energetic and determined, he’s always working to set new goals and push himself to the next level.

Jacob was inspired by the prompt ‘What does running the Bridge Day 5k RUN look like to you?’ Here is his description of his art piece:

“Running the Bridge Day 5K looks like an exciting challenge and an unforgettable experience. To me, it’s the chance to test my endurance, push myself harder than ever, and run across one of the most unique courses out there. It’s about the thrill of the race, the view from the bridge, and the feeling of accomplishment when I cross that finish line”

Emma Sexton

Youth Artist Bio: Emma Sexton is a bright, amazing nine-year-old who lives in Raleigh County. She loves making art, running, and Jesus. She also loves playing soccer, gymnastics, and softball. Her favorite color is teal and she is the best big sister to her brother, Asher.

Emma was inspired by the prompt ‘What does a more active West Virginia look like to you?’ Here is her description of her art piece:

“A more active West Virginia looks like the local people of our town, no matter what job they have, being involved in an active community. The road represents an area for people to be able to run and join in on being active.”

Michela Katherine Olcott

Youth Artist Bio: Hi I am 13 years old, I live in Kanawha county and I started running a year ago.

Michela was inspired by the prompt ‘What does running the Bridge Day 5k Run look like to you?’ See her piece of art below.
