Introduction
On September 19, 2025 in the New River Convention Center, West Virginia Wellness Champions from across the state and across industries gathered together to discuss the future of workplace wellness and share the needs of our workforce. Throughout the day open and honest conversations were had around the pressures and challenges of advocating for wellness in the workplace and the changing needs of our West Virginia workforce. This Manifesto was born from those conversations, built on a shared belief that workplace wellness is no longer a “perk,” but a foundational part of a thriving, resilient work culture.
The West Virginia Workplace Wellness Manifesto
In the heart of Appalachia, we know the meaning of hard work, resilience, and community. We believe that our greatest asset is our people. A thriving West Virginia is built upon a thriving workforce, and a thriving workforce is one that is healthy in body, sharp in mind, and strong in spirit.
This manifesto is a declaration of our shared commitment. It is a promise to move beyond wellness as a program and to embed it into the fabric of our culture. It is our guide for planting the seeds of well-being in our workplaces, knowing that with persistence, care, and community, they will grow into a stronger, healthier future for all.
We, the champions of workplace wellness in West Virginia, commit to these principles:

1. We Cultivate Roots, Not Just Branches.
We understand that sustainable change doesn’t happen overnight. We reject the pressure for instant results and instead commit to the patient, persistent work of building a strong foundation. We will “plant seeds” by starting with small, consistent actions. We will celebrate every small success to build momentum, knowing that the most resilient wellness cultures are grown from the ground up, not mandated from the top down.
2. We Are Like Water: Fluid, Persistent, and Powerful.
We recognize that every workplace and every employee is unique. We will not be rigid in our approach. Instead, we will be like the rivers that shape our state: fluid enough to find a way around obstacles, persistent enough to wear down resistance, and powerful enough to create profound change over time. We will listen first, asking our people what they truly need, and adapt our strategies to meet them where they are.

3. We Believe Any Movement is Better Than None.
We will dismantle the belief that wellness requires expensive equipment or extensive time. We will normalize and encourage “movement snacks,” active meetings, and short breaks. We will make movement an accessible and welcome part of the workday for everyone, regardless of their role or physical ability, creating an environment where every step forward counts.
4. We Fuel Our Work with Intention.
We recognize that nourishment is the fuel for our minds and bodies. We commit to making healthy choices the easy choices by promoting practical, budget-friendly nutrition. We will foster a community of shared learning through recipe exchanges, meal prep ideas, and “Lunch + Learns” that are engaging and relevant. We will prove that healthy food can be simple, delicious, and accessible to all.

5. We Practice Mindfulness, Not Mindlessness.
We acknowledge that mental and emotional health is the cornerstone of overall well-being. We will create a culture where it is safe to pause, to breathe, and to manage stress constructively. We will champion simple, evidence-based practices—like a minute of quiet reflection to start a meeting—that help us be more present, focused, and resilient. We hold to the wisdom that “You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this and you will find strength.” -Marcus Aurelius
6. We Are All Leaders in Wellness.
We believe that leadership is an action, not a title. While management support is critical, every single employee has the power to champion well-being. We will empower and equip internal wellness leaders at every level of our organizations, creating a diverse network of advocates who can inspire their peers and sustain our mission for the long term.

Conclusion
But what good is a belief system without action? If you’re inspired by this Manifesto, we challenge you to bring it to life in your workplace. Introduce it at your next team meeting and brainstorm what the principles look like for your department. Create a visual reminder by displaying it as a poster in a common area. Incorporate it into your new employee orientation to establish your wellness culture from day one. And use it as a guide for decision-making when your wellness committee is evaluating new ideas.
