Five graduating high school seniors have been awarded the Active SWV Kids Run Club Alumni Massey Family Foundation Scholarship through the Beckley Area Foundation to support their pursuit of post-secondary education.
Scholarship recipients include Bo Huffman, Shady Spring High School; Sydney Kotson, Shady Spring High School; Annabell Lemon, Liberty High School; Jackson Pack, Shady Spring High School; and Hunter Stanley, Liberty High School.
Starting with just one school in 2015, Valley Elementary, Active SWV’s Kids Run Club program has grown to reach over 100 schools and community groups, thousands of kids, and hundreds of volunteers throughout West Virginia. The Kids Run Club program provides a free opportunity for physical activity for youth ages 8-13, building confidence and physical literacy in children while also influencing the habits of their families. More than 60% of participants report inspiring a friend or family member to become more active, and now students can also benefit from the new scholarship opportunity.
To be eligible for the Active SWV Kids Run Club Alumni Massey Family Foundation Scholarship, students must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, have participated in the Active SWV Kids Run Club, and reside in one of the participating counties: Fayette, Kanawha, Logan, Mercer, Mingo, Nicholas, Raleigh, Summers, Webster, and Wyoming. As the Kids Run Club program continues to expand, additional counties will be included in the eligibility criteria.
The Massey Family Foundation has supported non-profits in central Appalachia for many years. The Foundations’ ongoing support of the BAF has increased unrestricted giving and grantmaking by making it possible for the BAF to offer matching opportunities to new and existing donors. The Massey Family Foundation contributed the founding grant to Active Southern West Virginia in 2015 and continues to support its mission of improving the health of the community.
