Active SWV Community Captain of the Month, Jaxon!

Meet Jaxon, the Active SWV July Community Captain of the Month

Jaxon went to high school in Shady Spring, WV and went to WVU for college. He moved from the state for a handful of years ago but has been back in southern West Virginia for the last year.

Jaxon’s main motivation for being active is getting to experience all the beauty found in the state of West Virginia and the different ways to get outside give him a different perspective on the place he loves so much. He fell in love with hiking and rock climbing in high school after his first visit to the New River Gorge. After moving back he got really into mountain biking, whitewater rafting, and kayaking so now he can get outside no matter the weather.

Jaxon decided to volunteer with Active SWV through his involvement with projects and being part of the new group, Beckley Area Trails.  Beckley Area Trails is activating new trails and experiences throughout the region and beyond, and Jaxon has been part of many projects including leading group rides. Jaxon says, “Getting the opportunity to work with Beckley Area Trails and get more involved with the mountain biking community, having the opportunity to bring that community together to see all the cool places around Beckley and the New River Gorge motivated me to become a community captain.” Jaxon is excited to see the community grow and the stewardship that comes along with that growth.

Getting outside and being active is how Jaxon regulates stress. “It’s become my healthy crutch and now when I don’t get outside and move my body, I can get more agitated which I really don’t enjoy,” he says. Being active helps him stay centered and grounded, and he loves what that provides for him.

Folks of all walks are encouraged to join Active SWV free programs!  Active SWV provides opportunities to move your body and build a community at the same time. Health is incredibly important and isn’t just about moving your body, it’s also about having friends and family.  He says, “We are stronger together and getting strong together is really fun. Active SWV gives us that space.”
