Family Summer Fun Activities

Active SWV has some great family fun opportunities coming up this summer! Check out these activities and events, and get outside this July. 

July 21st: Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) and Kayaking 

Join Active SWV Community Captains and Adventure Fayette County to try out SUP and kayaking on the Fayette County Park pond! This program is perfect for kids and families to learn how to paddle in a safe and secure environment. All equipment is provided, and all volunteers are specially trained to facilitate water activities. 

Equipment and spots are limited, so be sure to sign up for your free membership and Pre-register before attending!

July Hikes for the Whole Family

Join Community Captain volunteers for hikes in July! See full program information and details on our website calendar

  • Beckley Area Trails Hikes – Thursdays
    • July 2nd at 6pm – Piney Bluff Trail Hike – meet at the first parking lot at the YMCA Paul Cline soccer complex
    • July 9th at 6pm – Wildwood Trail Hike – meet at the Piney Creek Preserve, Wildwood Trail parking area
    • July 16th at 6pm – Waterfalls and Overlook Trail Hike – meet at the Piney Creek Preserve, waterfalls parking area
    • July 23rd at 6pm – Rhododendron Run Trail Hike – meet at Little Beaver State Park at the second Rhododendron Run trailhead (wooded parking area)
  •  First Sunday Hike at Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park – Sunday, July 5th at 2pm – meet at the parking lot in the back of the park where the playground, monument, and overlook are
  • Lake Sherwood Hike – Thursday, July 16th at 9am – meet at Hollowell Park lot on GMS Drive (Lewisburg) or see Greenbrier County and Beyond Hiking on Facebook and contact the Community Captain Becky for more information
  • Babcock Mann’s Creek Gorge Hike – Saturday, June 20th at 9am – see Greenbrier County and Beyond Hiking on Facebook and contact the Community Captain Becky for more information

Submit to the Kids Creative Contest before July 31st deadline

This contest is an opportunity for kids to show off their art or writing skills and win free entry into Active SWV’s Bridge Day 5k RUN! The contest will have two two category options, ‘art’ and ‘essay.’

To submit you must be under 18 and a WV resident.

Train for the Beckley 5k – kids 12 and under race for FREE

Active SWV is bringing back the Beckley Half Marathon and 5K on September 26, 2026! Kids 12 and under are invited to run the 5k for free. 

Perfect for families, this event starts and finishes at the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine. Post race, runners can enjoy an authentic WV meal featuring pepperoni rolls, bean soup, and cornbread.

Beckley Area Beginner Bike Riding

Try out a bike ride with the family in Beckley! Community Captains are offering multiple dates to join this July. See all program details on our website calendar!

**Be sure to bring your own bike and helmet**

Beckley Area Trails Beginner Friendly Biking: Mondays and Tuesdays (bring your own bike):

  • July 6th at 6pm – Beginner Friendly Ride on the MacManus Rail Trail – meet at the 3rd Ave. parking area
  • July 13th at 6pm – Grey Flats North Ride – meet at the first parking lot at the YMCA Paul Cline soccer complex
  • July 20th at 6pm – Beginner Friendly Ride at Needleseye Park – meet at the parking area at Needleseye Park, Oak hill
  • Tuesdays at 5:45pm – locations TBA
