October Community Captain of the Month: Sarah Blackburn

Sarah Blackburn is the Active SWV Community Captain of the Month for October!

Sarah is a climbing guide who donates time to Active SWV free climbing programs every month. If you have attended one of these programs, you know what a talented instructor she is and what a gift she is giving the communities around her.

Sarah moved here from North Carolina three years ago with her husband, George, and their border collie, Schätze.

Sara was never very active until she started rock climbing. The intellectual challenge of solving the puzzle of the route motivated her to get in better shape.

Sarah volunteers with Active SWV to offer free climbing programming because, “Rock climbing outdoors can feel intimidating, and I love being able to make it more accessible and fun for people,” she says.

Sarah stays motivated because of the joy of unlocking a new route and solving it is a great motivation.  Also, being able to be outdoors and enjoy nature also helps her prioritize activity.

She says that everyone should try an Active SWV free program because,  “It’s really cool to have so many low-commitment programs to access so you can try different activities until you find your joy.”

To find your joy, check out the Active SWV website calendar. Monthly free programs total over 150!
