We know that building healthy habits can feel like one more thing on a long to-do list, especially in communities facing economic and social barriers. Impactful and sustainable lifestyle change means identifying health behaviors that may be standing in our way, all while navigating potential barriers, such as economic factors, our physical environment, and access to healthcare. And none of this even takes into consideration our ingrained systemic beliefs.
Governor Morrisey’s Mountaineer Mile initiative as part of his ‘Move Your Body, Change Your Life’ pillar is a call to action for every West Virginian. Active Southern West Virginia is answering that call with a fresh and engaging approach that celebrates movement in all its forms.
What if we shift our perspective? What if we begin by recognizing and celebrating the movement we’re already doing?
We renew and build upon our Mountaineer Pride.
Active SWV, partnered with The WV Physical Activity Plan is excited to launch ‘Move More with Active SWV,‘ a program designed to help West Virginians discover and expand their existing activity levels.
Instead of demanding another hour at the gym, we’re asking: ‘How do you measure your Mountaineer Mile?’
Identify the ways you’re already moving throughout the day – from walking to the mailbox to vacuuming the living room.
Determine how many minutes or steps of various activities (ReFit, paddling, skating, pickleball, etc.) equate to a mile.
Gradually add more movement to their daily routines, building towards the CDC-recommended 150 minutes of physical activity per week.
“Join Active SWW and the WV Physical Activity Plan in making the ‘Move Your Body, Change Your Life’ pillar a resounding success. By focusing on all ability levels, celebrating existing activity, and providing easy to use resources, we can empower West Virginians to take charge of their health, one measured mile at a time.”
