Ansted Middle School Kids Run Club powered by Active SWV and sponsored by Adventures On The Gorge and Hico Piggly Wiggly. Hope and inspiration come from community leaders. PE teacher Kate Miller and volunteer facility spent the spring semester applauding, encouraging, and provide on going support to these Ansted kids.
Ansted Middle School students can walk from their school to the trail head of Mill Creek Rail Trail which is part of Hawks Nest State Park. During their twice a week training days weather permitting, the club would run the 4 mile trail preparing for race day. Read more about their preparations here.
On race day the club was joined by area runner, Daniel McDowell. McDowell told his story of growing up in a small coal town in Fayette County and beginning his running out of necessity to get to work when his car broke down. Realizing the many benefits including the possibility of winning area races, McDowell began competing and never looked back.
“Great time yesterday afternoon running with Ansted Middle School Active SWV Kids Run Club on the Mill Creek trail! After witnessing first hand the abilities and gifts some of these kids have it renews my faith in the hidden talents that still thrive in the communities of southern WV. I was so proud and encouraged to see this great group of young people take part in a running group and perform at this level after a moderate training schedule. I believe the potential for greatness still lies in the hearts of our communities and children. And if given the right encouragement and opportunities, who knows what could happen.” – Daniel McDowell
There were many discussions on why running is beneficial and what each student hopes to gain from this experience. From wanting to loose weight, to becoming stronger, to having fun with friends, all provide motivation and rewards to Active SWV Kids Run Club programs.
Our goal is to impact the negative health outcomes that have blighted our region for too long by starting with the kids; fostering in them a habit and the skills needed to maintain a physically active lifestyle. The ultimate goal is that they can involve someone at home in their training and teach a parent, sibling, grandparent, guardian etc. the things they’ve learned at run club so that the impact can grow to reach families and entire communities.
All races are participation based with no timing nor placing. It is a team program where everyone wins. High fives all around!
Active SWV is excited to continue to work with Ansted Middle School in the fall. If you have a school in mind for a run club, please let us know. Does your school need an Active SWV Kids Run Club?
