Active SWV Kids Running Club
Active Southern West Virginia completed its first elementary school running club pilot program in partnership with Valley Elementary School in Smithers, Fayette County, West Virginia fall 2015. Since then, Active SWV has expanded running clubs to Ansted Middle School, Summersville Elementary, and the Energy Express summer program at the Southern Appalachian Labor School at Beards Fork.
THE FACTS ARE IN: Survey data, collected from the Summersville Elementary school run club, is currently in review by the West Virginia University School of Public Health. So far, the data has shown a statistically significant increase in the number of days that participants achieve 60 minutes of physical activity. Additionally, there was a notable reduction in reported TV hours during school days. Over 50% of the participants reported watching less TV after participation in the run club program.
The Active SWV Kids Run program believes in the value of encouraging youth to be physically active on a daily basis. Families in our region face many challenges and the staff at Active SWV are ready to facilitate the programs needed to strengthen our region.
