Walking and biking are coming back in style as people are prioritizing the health of the environment and ourselves more. And Active Southern West Virginia is here for it.
For four years, Active SWV’s Bike Walk SWV program has steadily spread influence over our region. Last year boasts several mile makers including the passing of Complete Streets Policy in 3 additional municipalities. Furthermore, the City of Beckley has had an exceptionally great year for bike and walk ability.
City of Beckley Setting the Bar
In November 2019, with the support of Active SWV, Beckley received one of only 20 Honorable Mentions awarded nationwide from the League of American Bicyclists. The League sets a national standard for bike-ability, and their Honorable Mention nationally recognize communities beginning efforts to address the needs of bicyclists. In 2017, Beckley and Active SWV formed a Bike Pedestrian Action Committee (BPAC). Since then, Beckley’s BPAC has enjoyed several accomplishments including:
- Complete Streets Policy passed
- Installed 14 bike racks on city buses
- Installation of bike racks, bike repair stations, and way-finding signage
- Hosts free, guided monthly bike/walk events
Gearing Up for 2020
While the accomplishments of our Bike Walk communities are remarkable, the most exciting part is that they show no signs of slowing down in 2020. In addition to Beckley, Active SWV also proudly partners with Mount Hope, Oak Hill, Hinton, and Fayetteville. Each passed Complete Streets Policy resolutions as well. Equally important, each are taking steps to uphold that resolution. Here are just a few highlights:
- Mt Hope Rail Trail Project – enters 4th year establishing a major trail and environmental protection project
- Fayetteville – Town Council to nominate BPAC members at next meeting
- Oak Hill – submitting letter of intent to apply for People for Bikes grant to fund a one-mile trail connectivity project
- Hinton – working with Active SWV to find funding for way-finding improvement project
This year will be an exciting one for Bike Walk SWV to be sure.
