September Participant of the Month Sharon Toney
Sharon Toney is a lifelong resident of southern West Virginia. She describes her faith, her son and his family, and her 25 years of elementary education experience as important parts of who she is.
Sharon describes herself as “proactive”, meaning that she stays active to prevent the negative effects of living an inactive lifestyle. Sharon began a daily walking regime when the rail trail opened in her community, even before she knew the benefits of walking regularly.
Sharon is a dual participant in Active SWV programs. She started getting “active” with us through the Workplace Wellness program with Bridgit Arnold, and then began attending Bridgit’s weekly walking group (Tuesdays at 6pm at the YMCA soccer complex in Beckley). Sharon admits that “the convenience of having a supportive workplace is a plus.”
Staying motivated is easy for Sharon, in part due to Community Captain and Workplace Wellness volunteer, Bridgit Arnold. “Bridgit regularly presents to us healthy challenges that affect different areas of our lives.” Showing people small changes they can make in their daily lives can impact their health in the areas of physical movement, nutrition, and water intake.
Sharon says someone should join a free Active SWV physical activity program because it helps you stay committed to a healthy lifestyle and you will meet new people.
