Three new board members join in 2026
The organization has the mission to provide an ecosystem of physical activity for West Virginians of all ages by offering programs led by trained volunteers from within the communities, schools, and workplaces they serve as a means of promoting healthy lifestyles and preventing chronic disease.
The Active SWV Board of Directors oversee the governance of the organization. They reach into their networks for partnerships. Board members bring lived experiences and professional skills to the organization. They are action oriented and show up to lend a hand to the staff, volunteers, and participants.
Join us in welcoming Lauren Weatherford, Ray Funk, and Barbie Dobbins to the Active Southern West Virginia Board of Directors!
Lauren Weatherford, WVU Extension, Fayette & Nicholas Counties
Lauren works across Fayette and Nicholas Counties as the Family and Community Development Agent/Associate Professor for WVU Extension. She has served on numerous non-profit boards and holds a masters in public administration. Lauren has provided trainings to the Active SWV staff in addition to assisting with employee interviews. “I have been partnering with Active SWV for years. I believe in the mission, the staff, and the work.” Lauren is a friend, a motivator, and holds a high standard with those she works with.
Ray Funk, Blue Ridge Risk Partners, Fayette County
Ray has assisted Active SWV with the WV Board of Risk policy for years as the Commercial Lines Manager for Blue Ridge Risk Partners (formally Lively Insurance). Ray is a Fayette County native with previous experience on the board of the WV Sports Festival and currently the vice president with the Oak Hill Lions Club. Ray shares what drew him to a board role with Active SWV; “The variety of programs available to everyone and promoting activities which benefit health and well-being of the community.”
Barbie Dobbins, Pace Analytical Services, Raleigh & Summers Counties
Barbie is a beloved volunteer with Active SWV. She hikes, paddles, runs, and cheers on those around her. Her professional skills of writing, and public speaking highlight her enjoyment of guiding others as a supportive and motivational leader. Barbie works and lives in Raleigh County now, but her roots run deep in Summers County.
What drew Barbie to Active SWV? “I come from a family of conservationists and outdoor people. I was active in my teens and twenties, but once “real life” kicked in, I found myself developing a more sedentary and unhealthy lifestyle. Active SWV activities were organized, free, and supportive. Through Active I have found a community of like-minded people with whom to grow and adventure. And I love that we share this with our community.”
Open invitation for additional board members
Active SWV welcomes new board members every year. The volunteer service is a three year term with up to three renewals. To date the board meeting have meet quorum throughout the organizations history. If you are interested in learning more, please reach out through info@activeswv.com.
