
City of Hinton Passes Complete Streets Policy
On October 23, 2019 the City of Hinton joined the growing commitment to increase safety for people in the community by becoming the 11th city in West Virginia to adopt a Complete Streets policy.

The ecosystem of Active Southern West Virginia programs reaches volunteers and participants across communities, schools, local government, and workplaces. A dynamic and passionate new team member, Veronica Crosier, will support and expand the reach of these programs.

City of Beckley Passes a Complete Streets Resolution
The Beckley City Council passed a Complete Streets Policy for the city at it’s regularly scheduled meeting on July 23rd, 2019 becoming the 8th city in WV to adopt a Complete Streets policy.

Last month Active SWV began a series of group walking event in the City of Beckley called “Walk with the Mayor”.

The Beckley BPAC (Bicycle Pedestrian Action Committee) started meeting in 2017 focusing on projects and events to enhance walking and biking assets in the Beckley area.

In Mount Hope, WV a vibrant mural resides on a main street building. “The Mount Hope Phoenix Wall”, by Ian Bode and Brian Pickens, is a visual representation depicting a town that rose from the ashes after the fire of 1910.

In the spring of 2018 the town of Fayetteville, WV received an Honorable Mention from the League of American Bicyclists. The Honorable Mention is given to communities who have worked to initiate projects that improves their cyclists’ safety, community awareness and cycling accessibility

Andrew Davis has served as Active Southern West Virginia’s Pedestrian, Bike and Trail Coordinator for over two years.

In a joint effort to improve the range of multimodal transportation opportunities throughout the greater Beckley area, city officials and the leadership of the New River Transit Authority operated by Raleigh County Community Action agreed to work together to acquire and install external bike racks on the vehicles used by the New River Transit Authority.
