Active’s SWV’s October Community of the Month is Powellton, WV. Powellton is located on the western border of Fayette county, adjacent to Kanawha county. Armstrong Creek, a tributary of the Kanawha River, flows through the community. Armstrong Mountain with its prehistoric stone ruins is also located in the Powellton area, adding to the deep history of the community.
With its location within the Kanawha Coalfield, Powellton has a history rooted in the coal industry. The only remaining beehive coke ovens in the Kanawha Coalfield are located in Powellton, where Coal and Coke operations in the region date back to the 1980s.
Active SWV is seeking a community member in Powellton or the surrounding area to revive a walking group in region. Previously, volunteers led a walking group in Adena Village in Mount Carbon. For more information on how to get started, please contact Active SWV’s Volunteer Coordinator Erin at [email protected]
