Beckley and Fayetteville, WV, recognized by the League of American Bicyclists
Each year, the League of American Bicyclists ranks communities across the country on their bicycle-friendliness. This year, two of Active SWV’s Bike/Walk SWV communities received recognition. The City of Beckley was given a Bronze Level award, and the Town of Fayetteville received an Honorable Mention.
Such recognition for southern WV is remarkable, as only two other cities in all of WV have ever received a higher award from the League. To be considered as a Bicycle Friendly Community, communities must complete a rigorous application process which examines the 5 E’s of bike-friendliness:
- Engineering
- Education
- Encouragement
- Enforcement
- Evaluation
Beckley and Fayetteville’s respective Bicycle Pedestrian Action Committees (BPACs) submitted their applications earlier this fall. Each BPAC will use feedback from the League to begin planning for a year of initiatives for 2021. It is the work of BPACs to make their communities more accessible and welcoming to non-motorists of all kinds, and Active SWV looks forward to supporting their advocacy and programming for years to come.
The Active SWV Bike/Walk SWV program provides guidance and technical assistance to communities in southern WV at no cost. Our aim is to help you advocate and implement initiatives to increase bike/walk-ability in your hometown.
