November Community Captain of the month, Nathan Kessler!
Community Captain of the month, Nathan Kessler says that he “stays active so that I can live a full, healthy life.” Check out the owner of Mountaineer Discs in Beckley, WV to learn about the emerging sport of disc golf!
Because physical activity helps mental health, Nathan believes that it makes everything more enjoyable. He started being physically active as a senior in high school and participated on the swim team. In college, he added running and weightlifting, and now disc golf rounds out his activity portfolio.
Nathan became motivated to volunteer with Active SWV to help promote the sport that he loves, disc golf, in his community. “It is such a fun sport that is a very accessible way to be active. I found a passion for the sport during the lockdown in 2020, and I want to bring the joy to others,” states Nathan.
Keeping motivated is easy for Nathan, being so passionate about his sport. He also wants to be healthy, happy, and a good disc golf player. Staying active through disc golf also enables him to enjoy another passion, hiking. Nathan says, “I am an avid hiker, and many hikes require a good level of physical fitness.”
Nathan believes everyone should find an activity to join with Active Southern West Virginia because activity is so important. In contrast, a sedentary lifestyle can lead to chronic pain and illness as well as poor mental health. “And these programs make living an active lifestyle accessible to anyone in the community, they are a great opportunity.”
This free family disc golf program led by Nathan Kessler, is a true portrait of how Active Southern WV strives to remove barriers to physical activity programs in our community. This activity is free, open to the public, and equipment is included. Come out and join Nathan or any Active SWV program, check out our program calendar here.
