Active Places: Oak Hill

Oak Hill continues to grow as a hub for recreation and community wellness in southern West Virginia. With access to parks, trails, climbing areas, and community gathering spaces, residents and visitors have many opportunities to stay active throughout the year. Through partnerships with local organizations and dedicated volunteers, Active Southern West Virginia works to help connect people with free, welcoming opportunities to move.

Recreation in Oak Hill

Oak Hill is uniquely positioned for outdoor activity. Community assets like Needleseye Park, the local Rail Trail, and public gathering spaces provide natural places for people to explore, exercise, and connect with others. When these places are paired with community-led programming, they become powerful tools for improving health and building stronger neighborhoods.

Why Community-Led Activity Matters

Regular physical activity can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure while also improving mental health, energy levels, and sleep quality. Group activities add another important benefit: social connection. When people move together, they are more likely to stay consistent, build friendships, and feel supported in their wellness journey.

Community-led programs are especially important in rural areas where access to traditional fitness facilities may be limited. By using local parks, trails, and community spaces, Oak Hill continues to demonstrate how recreation assets can support healthier lifestyles.

A Call for Volunteers

The continued growth of recreation opportunities in Oak Hill depends on local leaders who are willing to help organize activities and bring people together. Many of the current programs started with someone who simply wanted to create a space where others could move and connect.

If you are passionate about hiking, walking, outdoor recreation, or group fitness, consider volunteering to help start a new program or support an existing one.
