Before Covid-19, Stephanie Hill was attending the REFIT at Central Headstart in Beckley 2-3 days a week for the last year and a half. Active SWV Community Captains have tried new and inventive ways to keep participants engaged during this time by providing resources and virtual programs.
This June we are featuring Scarbro, WV as the Community of the Month. Scarbro is located in Fayette County in close proximity to New River Gorge recreation destinations, rail trails, Plum Orchard Lake, and offers community programming including Active SWV Gentle Yoga at the New River Health Scarbro location.
The influence of John Henry’s hard work and perseverance can still be seen in the town of Talcott. Active SWV’s partners at Sprouting Farms are proof of that. Sprouting Farms is a four-season non-profit farm and an education and resource center located in Summers County, WV.
Active SWV would like to introduce you to the May Community Captain of the Month, Vickie Aliff. Vickie is the woman behind the camera posting all the amazing hiking trail videos on the Active SWV Bulletin Board Facebook page.
The Move Your Way(sm) challenge provides posters, videos, and online interactive tracker to build a weekly plan of physical activity. This interactive activity tracker gives you a list of all the ways your body can move during the day; walk, dance, jump rope, garden, house chores, and many more.
Active SWV would like to introduce you to our Beckley REFIT Community Captains. These ladies have stepped up their game and continued to provide and help our communities during this trying time of physical distancing.
As a new feature to our monthly newsletter, we will be highlighting a small coal-impacted community with the intent of introducing their residents and neighbors to the Active SWV mission of improving health through physical activity.
Hiking to connect with nature can be a great way to stay active and physically distance yourself during these trying times.
Active Southern West Virginia is committed to the health and well-being of southern West Virginians. At this time we are limited in in-person meeting locations for group physical activity.
